DOOM, the game that defined a genre and made history in video games, is back in the news thanks to a new re-release announced by id Software: DOOM + DOOM II. The collection, which combines the first two chapters of the saga in an enhanced and enriched version, is now available on a wide range of platforms, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC via Steam, GOG and the Microsoft Store. The launch price is 9.99 euros, but there is a surprise for longtime fans: those who already own DOOM or DOOM II will be able to download the new version for free.
The return of DOOM and DOOM II with a new look is a tribute not only to nostalgic fans, but also to a new generation of gamers who want to discover the roots of the first-person shooter genre. DOOM, originally released in 1993, literally revolutionized the world of video games, setting the standard that still influences the development of FPS (first-person shooter) games today. Its sequel, DOOM II, released in 1994, consolidated this success, enriching the gaming experience with new challenges and content.
The new DOOM + DOOM II edition is not just a re-release of the original games, but a complete package that includes a series of expansions and additional content. Among these are TNT: Evilution and The Plutonia Experiment, two additional episodes that made history in the expansion of DOOM II content, and No Rest for the Living, another significant addition that further expands the game’s universe. For the more hardcore fans, there’s also Sigil, a mod created by legendary designer John Romero, and an all-new expansion, Legacy of Rust, made in collaboration with Nightdive Studios and MachineGames.
In total, DOOM + DOOM II offers players 187 mission maps and 43 deathmatch maps, providing hours of entertainment and challenge. But that’s not all: this re-release also introduces a series of technical enhancements that make the gameplay experience even smoother and more immersive. These include support for cross-platform online multiplayer, allowing up to 16 players to compete or collaborate regardless of their platform, and the addition of community-supported mods with a convenient in-game browser, allowing fans to easily explore and install their own fan creations.
On the technical side, DOOM and DOOM II benefit from a significant performance boost with multi-threaded rendering supporting resolutions up to 4K and a frame rate of 120 frames per second on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. This is all made possible by the KEX engine, which also brings compatibility with hundreds of mods created by the community over the past 25 years. To make the game even more accessible to a wider audience, id Software has implemented several accessibility features, including a modern font for improved readability, high-contrast mode, text-to-speech, and speech-to-text for multiplayer chat. Additionally, the game is now localized into eight new languages, including Brazilian Portuguese and Russian.
DOOM + DOOM II also includes a host of refinements found in previous versions, including modern controller support, a quick-swap weapon system, gyroscopic targeting on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Switch, and support for up to four-player local split-screen. For purists, the game also restores the original soundtrack using period-correct hardware, providing authentic aural immersion into the fast-paced action of DOOM. Overall, DOOM + DOOM II is a must-have for both veterans and newcomers to the series. Combining classic content with modern innovation, this re-release celebrates the legacy of one of the most influential games of all time, ensuring the iconic space marine will continue to battle demons for years to come.
