The film ‘The Taste of Christmas’, whose premiere is scheduled for next Thursday with the production of Salma Hayek, It immerses itself in the concepts of family, love and friendship around Mexican food, a central element of the plot, as revealed by the cast of actors and actresses in an interview.
The film, also produced by José Tamez under Ventanarosa Productions, features three intertwined stories set in the days leading up to Christmas. Although at first they seem unrelated, they eventually converge under the common theme of food and warmth.
Armando Hernández, actor who plays Santiago in the film, summarizes the plot with three words: “Family, love and friendship.” Andrés Almeida, who plays Genaro, adds that the story reflects many aspects of a Mexican Christmas, addressing various problems that develop during those days and how they are resolved.
The narrative takes place alongside Mariana Treviño, who plays Valeria, and both characters embody the chefs responsible for preparing Christmas Eve dinner for a family in Mexico City, where the plot takes place. Something more than a working relationship arises between them.
“We teach the ritual of preparations on the eve of a celebration, which is getting together,” explains actress Treviño. They highlight that the menu is not the traditional one for these dates, but rather has a unique magic, since it is based on the ancestral gastronomy of Yucatán, in the southeast of Mexicoand was prepared by renowned researcher and chef Ricardo Muñoz Zurita exclusively for the film.
Mexican-American actress Mónica Dionne, who plays Carmela, a mother estranged from one of her daughters, highlights the importance of Christmas dishes in the plot. According to his character, this year he decides to order the food instead of cooking, and his daughter Valeria is in charge.
Along with Genaro, Valeria meets Santiago and Chava, played by Hernández and Juan Carlos Medellín, respectively, who play the role of Santa Claus working in Alameda Central taking photos with children.
Hernández highlights that the most difficult part of the recording, made in spring, was “the suit,” and it reached its climax in a “very action-packed” scene. Despite the intensity, Medellín points out that it was very fun.
The LGBTTTI debate enters the scene as the chefs and Santa Clauses meet with Carmela’s family, who must address the gender identity of one of her daughters. Dionne points out that ‘The Taste of Christmas’ addresses sexual diversity from a perspective “without judgment” on both sides.
“Nor can you expect people to understand the first time when they have been used to another way all their lives. Everyone has their time and as long as there is good will to try to understand this is the main thing,” says the actress.
The entire cast shares the idea that the film represents “very well” the Christmas spirit and the “experience in syncretism.”of Mexican culture. Treviño highlights that the film has the ability to assimilate and give its own identity to the foreign that arrives, thus reflecting the spirit of Mexican culture.
