Scrolling through #dimpleplasty, which has garnered millions of views on the app, you’ll see videos of users proudly showing off their newly “acquired” dimples. Interest in the procedure appears to be at an all-time high and is expected to increase in the coming years.
Dimple creation surgery is a surgical procedure that is on the rise.
“My mom and my brother have really nice dimples,” says the 30-year-old Sacramento-based dental treatment coordinator. “Growing up, I always wanted to look like them.” She’s wanted her own for a long time. Looking at her “before” photos, she looks younger than 30, with smooth, flawless skin and rosy cheeks, but in “after” photos when she’s smiling, a childlike innocence comes through. It’s easy to see why—it’s the dimples she has now. She “got them back” in late 2023.
Dr. Nguyen Van Cuong – Member of the Ho Chi Minh City Plastic Surgery Association provided: “The rise of dimple surgery seems to be part of a much larger ongoing plastic surgery trend, moving towards minimally invasive procedures to create smaller, more subtle changes to the face, in addition to the fatigue caused by injecting fillers. People are looking to make themselves look younger with methods other than injecting fillers.” Many patients seek out plastic surgeons because they find that it is the “simplicity, affordability, minimal recovery time” and the association with prolonging youth that makes it a desirable surgery.
Dimples are a genetic trait that only occurs in about 20-30% of the world’s population. Compared to traditional cosmetic surgery, which aims to “correct” perceived flaws or deformities, dimple creation mimics or creates a natural deformity, albeit an attractive and sought-after one. For many, surgery will add to the feature, but for others, it can recreate dimples that have faded over time.
Decreased skin elasticity due to aging can make dimples appear less obvious.
What happens during dimple surgery?
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and requires virtually no downtime. There are several variations of the surgical technique, but all are minimally invasive and leave no external scarring. Patients with good skin quality, especially those with lots of collagen and elasticity, are good candidates, while those with fuller cheeks may need to have cheek fat removed to create a more pronounced dimple effect. The point of maximum hollowness is the ideal location for the dimple. Most dimple creations today are done from inside the mouth using sutures. The sutures pull the skin down to the muscle. Depending on the patient’s preference, the surgeon may create smaller or larger/deeper dimples. Once the incision heals and the scar forms, you will have dimples.
“I had to take antibiotics before my cosmetic appointment and the surgery took about 30-40 minutes. They gave me lidocaine (local anesthetic) and sutures (stitches) through my cheeks, creating two stitches. The stitches they used will dissolve over time,” a female client shared with the writer after a follow-up visit at La Ratio Aesthetic Institute. During the recovery process after surgery, the patient’s cheeks are a bit sore due to the stitches inside the mouth, so it is recommended to eat liquids and soft foods for the first few days to avoid aggravating the stitches.
Dimple creation cost and side effects
The cost of dimple surgery can vary depending on the skill of the surgeon.
You can expect to pay an average of $1,500 to $3,500 for this invasive cosmetic procedure, but it can be much more. “I paid $4,440 for the surgery and an additional $200 for an injection in each cheek to prevent keloid scars,” said a client at Kim Anh Cosmetic Clinic.
“Keloid scarring, which is a thick, raised scar, is one of the risks associated with the procedure, in addition to the possibility of infection in that area if post-operative care is not followed, and facial nerve damage, although rare, is always a possibility,” added Dr. Nguyen Van Cuong.
