Delhi Airport Terminal-1 Roof Collapse: A portion of the roof of Terminal-1 of Delhi’s Indira Gandhi Airport collapsed amid heavy rain on Friday morning. Some cars and taxis parked below were hit by the accident, killing at least one person and injuring eight others. Flight operations from the terminal have also been temporarily halted. The accident happened on a day when the country’s capital Delhi is receiving continuous rain. According to the records till 8.30 am today, 228.1 mm of rain had been recorded at the Safdarjung Meteorological Center in the last 24 hours.
The accident happened around 5 am
Giving information about the accident, a spokesperson of Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) said, “Due to heavy rains since this morning, a part of the roof of the old departure forecourt of Terminal 1 of Delhi Airport collapsed around 5 am.” He said that all flights departing from Terminal 1 have been temporarily stopped and check-in counters have also been closed as a safety measure. PTI has quoted fire brigade officials as saying that one person is still trapped under the collapsed roof.

Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu posted a social media post X said that he is personally monitoring the incident of T1 roof collapse. He wrote in the post, “Rescue teams are working on the spot. Also, airlines have been advised to help all the affected passengers at T1. The injured have been taken to the hospital. Rescue operations are underway.”

impact on flight operations
PTI quoted sources as saying that departures of flights from Terminal 1 have been suspended till 2 pm. Sources said the airport operator is also considering temporarily shifting all operations from T1 to T2 and T3. An IndiGo spokesperson said in a statement that the damage at the terminal has affected flight operations. “Flights in Delhi have been cancelled as passengers are unable to enter the terminal. Passengers already inside the terminal will be able to board their flights, but those with later flights will be given alternative options.” The statement advised customers to check the status of their flights before leaving for the airport.

Heavy rain in Delhi, IMD issues advisory
Heavy rains lashed Delhi-NCR and adjoining areas on Friday morning. The Indian Meteorological Department said that moderate to intense rains are likely to continue in Delhi for the next few hours. Due to continuous rains, many areas of the capital were flooded. Due to heavy rains, IMD officials have expressed the possibility of slippery roads, low visibility, traffic disruptions and waterlogging in low-lying areas. The department has issued an advisory advising people not to go to waterlogged areas. It has also instructed to check the traffic situation before going out on the roads and stay updated about weather warnings.
