During the Tokyo Game Show 2024, Sony Interactive Entertainment and Kojima Productions shared new details and footage regarding the highly anticipated Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. Creator Hideo Kojima revealed interesting new features, including the names of the main characters and Japanese voice actors, an in-game photo event and an in-game performance by singer Daichi Miura. During the event, Kojima introduced the game’s main characters, played by internationally renowned actors and voiced by Japanese talents: Tarman, played by George Miller and voiced in Japanese by Mitsuru Miyamoto; Dollman, played by Fatih Akin and voiced by Tomokazu Sugita; Tomorrow, played by Elle Fanning and voiced by Shion Wakayama; Rainy, played and voiced by Shioli Kutsuna.
One of the most curious innovations presented was the instant photo mode, where players will be able to photograph the game’s characters using an instant camera. Kojima specified that, although this element may seem purely playful, it will actually have an impact on the plot of the game: “It would be better to take good photos”, suggested the game director, implying that the images taken could influence the story. In addition to this event, a separate “Photo Mode” will be available, offering additional creative opportunities for players.
One of the most spectacular surprises was the reveal of Japanese singer Daichi Miura’s in-game performance. By performing a certain action within the game’s Private Room, players will be able to witness a special event in which Miura, accompanied by the character Dollman, performs the new song “Horizon Dreamer”. The song will be available on music streaming platforms such as Apple Music and Spotify starting September 30th.
Despite the lack of an official release date, Kojima confirmed that the game will release in 2025. During the event, he said: “Although we have not yet announced a specific date, we already have a plan. However, there are various factors which could affect the release. We said 2025, so it will be released next year. The official date will be announced later.” Kojima joked that Death Stranding 2 will be “even stranger” than the first chapter, concluding on an enigmatic note: “We’re wondering: is there really a game like this out there?”
