Cyprus: Antonio Guterres proposes Canadian Colin Stewart as special representative of the UN SG

AA / New York

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has proposed appointing Canadian diplomat Colin Stewart as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative in Cyprus.

The Anadolu Agency correspondent, citing informed diplomatic sources, said Guterres had suggested to the Cypriot, Turkish and Greek sides to appoint Stuart as special representative to succeed Elizabeth Spehar.

If both Cypriot sides agree to the proposed name, Guterres is expected to inform the UN Security Council of his intention to appoint his new special representative.

The appointment of a new UN special envoy for the Cyprus issue follows the tripartite meeting held recently by António Guterres in New York with the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Ersin Tatar, and the head of the Greek administration of Southern Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades.

Stewart has held several positions at the United Nations, and previously served as Special Representative of the United Nations SG for Western Sahara and Head of MINURSO.

Cyprus has suffered since 1974 from a division between two parties, Turkish in the north and Greek in the south. In 2004, the Greek Cypriots rejected a plan presented by the United Nations aimed at reuniting the two parts of the island.

Since the failure of the UN-sponsored Cyprus reunification talks in Switzerland in July 2017, no formal UN-sponsored negotiations have taken place to settle the dispute over the island.
