Cummins takes 5 wickets in captaincy debut; Australia beat England by 147 runs in the Ashes

Australia dominate Gabba on the first day of the Test to celebrate Pat Cummins’ Test captaincy debut. Cummins outscored England by 147 runs in a five-wicket haul. England captain Joe Root won the toss and elected to bat. Pacer Mitchell Starc gave Australia a dream start by dismissing Rory Burns off the first ball of the first Test of the series. The latter was dominated by the Australian bowlers. Only four players in the England line-up have crossed the two-mark. Wicketkeeper-batsman Jose Butler was the top scorer with 39 (58). Oli Pope 35 (79), Chris Vokes 21 (24) and Haseeb Hameed 25 (75) were the other batsmen to cross the line. Cummins took 5 wickets for just 38 runs in 13.1 overs. Starc and Hazlewood took two wickets each and Cameron Green one. All-rounder Ben Stokes returns after a break in the English line-up. Stokes, who scored 5 off 21 balls, was bowled by Cummins. It was also Cummins’ first wicket of the match. The last session was abandoned due to rain and the first day’s play was stopped early.
