Côte d’Ivoire began its fifth general population and housing census on Monday, after those of 1975, 1988, 1998 and 2014.
The operation is to “take place until November 28. It will also make it possible to collect demographic data and inhabited sites as well as data on access to employment, drinking water and transport… ”, indicated Kaba Nialé, the Minister of Planning and Development, to the occasion of the launch.
“This information is useful. They will be used for planning, monitoring and evaluation of public policies at the central and decentralized levels. They are also useful for the conduct of private policies, ”he said, inviting people to adhere to the census operation.
More than 38,000 investigators, all vaccinated against Covid-19, are mobilized for this census, the budget of which amounts to 23.9 billion FCFA (42.1 million USD). 40,000 tablets and accessories are made available to the project.
The previous census, which dates back to 2014, counted 22.7 million inhabitants. But the operation was rather badly received by Ivorians, several of whom refused to be registered, because some thought it was an electoral maneuver, in view of the 2015 election.
