Jairam Ramesh, general secretary of the political party Congress, which has filed a petition challenging the amended rules in the Supreme Court, said on social media platform X that the Election Commission is a constitutional body. It has the responsibility of conducting free and fair elections. Therefore, it cannot be allowed to amend such an important rule so brazenly, unilaterally and without public consultation. He wrote that “especially not when that amendment eliminates public access to essential information that makes the electoral process more transparent and accountable.” Integrity in the electoral process is rapidly decreasing. Hopefully the Supreme Court will help in restoring it.”
A writ has been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the recent amendments to the Conduct of Elections Rules, 1961.
