Confiscated cannabis sold instead; Karnataka government suspends seven policemen

Hubli: Seven policemen have been suspended in Karnataka for selling cannabis seized from drug dealers. Hubli-Dharwad Police Commissioner Labhu Ram made the announcement, ANI news agency reported. The police have also decided to conduct a departmental inquiry against these officers.

The action was taken against APMC police inspector Viswanath Chougale and others. According to reports, the inspector and six other officials tried to settle the case without even registering an FIR in the cannabis seizure case and took bribes from the accused.

The case was registered after two persons were arrested in connection with cannabis smuggling and about 1.5 kg of cannabis was seized from them. They were released by the police, who avoided registering the case. It is alleged that he took bribe from them for this. But the incident was later reported in the local media.

Following the controversy over the police action, the Commissioner of Police had directed DCP K Ramarajan to conduct an inquiry into the matter. The action against the officials was based on the report submitted by the DCP. A detailed investigation will be conducted against seven officers, including the inspector. The DCP told the news agency that strict action would be taken against the culprits.

A similar incident took place in Bengaluru in July. Three officers have been suspended from the army in a case of forcing a young man to smoke cannabis and taking action against him. The action was taken by a woman police inspector and two other officers at the RMC Yard station. The young man later tried to commit suicide after pleading with him not to smoke cannabis. But his life was saved.

Inspector S Parvathamma, Sub-Inspector Anjinappa HM and Constable Umesh were suspended. The officers were suspended as per the report of North DCP Dharmender Kumar.
