Colin Powell, former US secretary of state, dies at age 84



Former US Secretary of State Colin Powell died on Monday, aged 84 from complications due to covid-19, his family reported. He was the first black man to hold the position.

“We lost a husband, a father, a grandfather and a great American”, wrote his family members in a statement posted on social networks, which added that the former secretary had completed the vaccination schedule against the coronavirus.

Powell died at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington. He was the first black man to hold the position of chief of staff for the armed forces, before becoming a head of diplomacy under the Republican presidency of George W. Bush.
