World Health Organization Director-General Tedros A. Ghebreyesus has been nominated for a second term. Tedros Gebreyesus of Ethiopia has been nominated by Germany and France. This is the first time that no candidate has been nominated by their own country for the top post of the UN health agency. Gebreyesus was also accused by the US of being close to China. This is the reason why the Trump administration broke ties with the WHO at that time.
New WHO chief will be elected in May 2022
Tedros has been in the news worldwide for the last 19 months for the efforts of the World Health Organization in combating the corona virus Pandemic. The next WHO Director-General will be elected at the next annual meeting of the Global Health Agency to be held in May 2022. The term of the Director General is five years. The diplomatic missions of France and Germany in Geneva announced on Twitter their support for Tedros for the post of WHO chief.
Tedros more likely to be reappointed
A diplomatic official in Geneva said 15 other EU members also supported Tedros’ nomination. The WHO said on its website that it does not plan to announce the full list of candidates until November. Some diplomatic officials said Tedros could not compete with anyone for the post.
Trump administration told China’s close
It is noteworthy that under the leadership of Tedros, the WHO had to face severe criticism from the Trump administration of America last year. In fact, the health agency was accused of exaggerating China’s initial efforts to deal with the Pandemic after the origin of Covid-19 in Wuhan. After which the angry US left the WHO.
Tedros became WHO chief due to China’s efforts?
The head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adrenom Gabreyesus, took over the reins of the WHO in 2017. It is said that he got this post because of lobbying for China. That is why he is taking pro-China decisions. Tedros is the first African to become the chief of WHO.
How does WHO get funds?
The World Health Organization receives funds in two ways, first – Assessed Contribution and second – Voluntary Contribution. The World Health Organization’s expenses are met only from the funds received in both these ways.
This fund is given by the member countries of the World Health Organization. It is already decided which country will give how much fund. This fund is determined by the data of the economy and population of that country. The World Health Organization receives most of its funding through assessed contributions. With this WHO funds its expenditure and program.
These funds are given for a certain program. The World Health Organization uses this fund only for those works in whose name this fund is found. For example, if the WHO has received funds from any organization or country to make a drug for the corona virus, then it can spend this fund only in making this vaccine.
World Health Organization and US funding
The World Health Organization gets the most funding in the world from the US. The US provides both unaided and voluntary funds to this organization. According to the report, the US alone contributes 22 per cent of WHO’s unassessed funds.
