On December 23, Xinhua news agency reported that a court in China had just issued a death sentence with possible amnesty for the perpetrator in a car crash that injured dozens of children in Changde city (Hunan province).
Driver Huang Wen received the death penalty with a 2-year stay of execution. This means that the sentence can be reduced to life imprisonment, depending on the offender’s behavior during the two-year period.
Previously on the morning of November 19, this driver was arrested at the scene after crashing his car, injuring 30 people, including 18 elementary school students in front of a school.
The court said the defendant carried out the attack to vent his anger after suffering investment losses and conflicts with family members. After committing the crime, the perpetrator got out of the car and used a weapon to attack everyone before being arrested.

According to CNN, images circulating on social networks show dozens of panicked children screaming and running into the schoolyard, with a man’s voice shouting “hurry up!”. Another video showed several people lying on the ground, apparently injured. Police then handcuffed a man in front of the car during the incident.
The court said the defendant chose “a large number of elementary school students as targets and showed “despicable motives and extreme cruelty”.
After similar incidents, Chinese President Xi Jinping directed “preventing risks at the source and quickly resolving conflicts and disputes” to prevent such incidents.
Last month, the court was directed to promptly hand down harsh punishments for violent attacks on the public. The prosecution also pledged to “resolve conflicts, control risks and maintain social stability”, and declared that it does not accept crimes that endanger students.
