Chhath Puja: Importance of four days of puja
Nahay Khay (First Day):The process of purification and cleansing takes place on the first day. Devotees take bath in holy rivers or ponds, especially in the morning, and consume the same food without onion or garlic. This is the beginning of the purification process.
Kharna (2nd day):On this day devotees observe fast without water from sunrise to sunset. In the evening they prepare prasad, usually kheer (rice pudding made with jaggery) and chapati, which is shared with family members and neighbours. Devotees break their fast after the evening puja.
Sandhya Arghya (third day):This is the main day of the festival. Devotees keep fast without water for the whole day. At sunset they gather at the river bank or pond and offer Arghya (prayer offering) to the setting sun. On this evening, traditional songs are sung and devotees express gratitude for life and energy.
Usha Arghya (fourth day): On the last day, devotees wake up early in the morning and offer prayers to the rising sun. The fast is broken after morning puja. This day concludes Chhath Puja, in which people pray for peace, prosperity and well-being.
