Chandigarh Nagar Nigam Result: Disturbed by the system, closed the Dhaba, contested the election with AAP and defeated the mayor… Chandigarh reminded Delhi

The results of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation elections were shocking. The Aam Aadmi Party, which entered the municipal elections for the first time, has emerged as the largest party. AAP candidates surprised familiar faces in this election. The most surprising result came from Ward No 17, where Damanpreet Singh of Aam Aadmi Party defeated Mayor Ravikant Sharma of BJP. Damanpreet runs a dhaba. In this election, from dhabawala, teacher to housewife, the old leaders were defeated.

Damanpreet, who defeated the mayor, used to run the dhaba

Aam Aadmi Party’s winning candidate Damanpreet Singh used to run a small dhaba. In a conversation with the English newspaper Indian Express, he said that he used to run a small dhaba in Chandigarh by the name of Sardar Ji Da Dhaba. But they had to shut it down after facing difficulties in the BJP-ruled municipal corporation. Damanpreet defeated present Chandigarh Mayor Ravikant Sharma from Ward No.17 by 828 votes.

As soon as Damanpreet’s victory was announced, his wife welcomed him with their newborn baby girl. Damanpreet says, ‘This victory has been achieved because of the honest attitude of the Arvind Kejriwal government in Delhi. People are fed up with the corruption in the municipal corporation. I am very happy that the people of my ward and God have given me this opportunity to serve the people.

Damanpreet told the English newspaper Indian Express, ‘I was harassed for no reason. Many a times, the challan was issued against me by the Medical Officer of Health (MOH) of the Municipal Corporation. Sometimes the people of some other department used to bother. Because of this I closed my dhaba and decided to fight with the system.

Results reminded of AAP’s debut in Delhi
The results of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation elections reminded one of the 2013 Delhi Assembly elections. Aam Aadmi Party made a great debut in this election. The party won 28 candidates in the 70-member assembly. Many low profile and unknown faces defeated veteran leaders in that election. No one had even heard the names of candidates like Rakhi Birla, Sanjeev Jha, Dinesh Mohania and Bandana Kumari, who were victorious from the Aam Aadmi Party. Arvind Kejriwal himself had defeated Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, who was in power for three consecutive terms, in the New Delhi seat.
