After being tracked by the Colombian navy and the San Andres coast guard, the speedboat was stopped more than 200 km from the San Andres archipelago.
Five men were arrested, including three Nicaraguans and two Costa Ricans.
Drug smuggling speedboat caught
The type of speedboat used by drug trafficking groups is recognized by US authorities as difficult to detect, has good seaworthiness and is not easy to intercept.
In addition, in recent years drug trafficking groups have developed more sophisticated means of transport, such as semi-submersible ships or even submarines.
Despite spending decades fighting the drug trade, Colombia remains one of the world’s top cocaine producers.
