Catalan independentist Carles Puigdemont banned from entering Canada

The Canadian Federal Court (the highest court in the country) has rejected a petition by Catalan independentist Carles Puigdemont to enter the country, local media reported on Tuesday.

Thus, the Catalan politician, who had been trying for two years to enter Canada by the door of Quebec, at the invitation of a provincial institution, was refused this entry by the Federal Court.

Made public Tuesday, the Federal Court’s decision rejecting the request made by Puigdemont’s lawyer was taken last Wednesday.

Recall that the former Head of the Catalan government was arrested in Italy by local authorities under a European arrest warrant, before being released and that he returned to Belgium where he has taken refuge since 2017. .

Judge Yvan Roy of the Federal Court justified his decision by the fact that “on reading the various documents which were filed by [Carles Puigdemont] for the purposes of obtaining the electronic travel authorization, it is understood that these offenses would include rebellion, sedition, embezzlement, prevarication and disobedience ”.

Foreign nationals must, in order to access Canada, obtain an “Electronic Travel Authorization” (eTA), which had already been refused in Puigdemont in 2019 already.

The Court notes that Carles Puigdemont did not clearly answer questions asked by the Immigration services by providing incomplete and inaccurate information about the criminal offenses allegedly committed by the opponent to the Spanish central government.

Carles Puigdemont was arrested last Thursday in southern Italy where he had come to participate in an event, under a European arrest warrant. He was released the next day pending a hearing scheduled for October 4 to rule on the extradition request filed by Spain.
