Pascale Cecile Veronique Ferrier, a Canadian citizen, has been sentenced to more than 21 years in prison for sending a ricin-laced letter to former President Donald Trump.
The sentencing of the 56-year-old woman with dual citizenship in Canada and France took place on Thursday, marking the culmination of a case that drew widespread attention.
Ferrier’s guilty plea in January stemmed from his involvement in the crafting and mailing homemade letters infused with ricin, a deadly toxinas published by the NBC network.
The letters were addressed not only to Trump, but also to eight Texas law enforcement officials.
Prosecutors revealed that each letter contained a “sinister message“, referring to a “special gift” that contained the toxic substance and, in case of failure, a veiled threat to invent a more potent poison.
The letter addressed to Trump was marked by scathing language, according to NBC, calling it “ugly tyrant clown” and urging him to withdraw from the election.
Veronique Ferrier further expressed her “concerns about the future of the United States” under his leadership. The letters from Texas, on the other hand, appeared to be motivated by a grudge related to Ferrier’s previous arrest in 2019 on a weapons charge in Texas, a case that was ultimately dismissed.
Ferrier’s subsequent arrest at the Peace Bridge border crossing in Buffalo, New York, further revealed his potentially dangerous intent. At the time of his arrest, he was found in possession of a loaded firearm, ammunition, knives, a taser, pepper spray, a baton and a false identification document. The discovery reinforced the seriousness of his actions.
During the sentencing process, Ferrier introduced herself as a grandmother and an “activist,” shying away from the terrorist label. He maintained that his ricin concoction was not lethally potent and was meant to be a warning rather than an instrument of harm.
In a statement to the judge, he regretted that his attempt to warn Trump did not prevent his actions.
United States District Court Judge Dabney L. Friedrich issued an 21.8-year prison sentence for Ferrier. In addition, prosecutors confirmed that after serving her sentence, she will be deported.
