Twelve people, including children, were killed, and 34 others were injured, when a bus overturned on a highway in the east of the country, the news agency reported overnight Saturday to Sunday. Egyptian MENA, citing a responsible source in the rescue service.
“The death toll from the bus accident on the road linking Cairo to the governorate of Suez reached 12 dead, including children, and 34 injured,” said the responsible source.
A preliminary report made public by MENA reported 7 dead and 30 injured.
The bus with several families on board was on the way back to Cairo after a sightseeing excursion.
Egypt’s health ministry has yet to comment on the accident.
Traffic accidents are recurrent in Egypt for several reasons, including laxity in the application of safety standards and irresponsible driving.
