Burkina Faso: soldier killed and 10 terrorists shot dead in attack on military detachment in east

A Burkinabè soldier was killed and ten terrorists shot dead on Friday, in an attack on the military detachment of Tankoualou in the province of Komondjoari, in eastern Burkina Faso, we learned on Saturday from corroborating sources.

“At least ten terrorists were killed during the night from Friday to Saturday, during an attack on the military detachment of Tankoualou (Komondjoari, East) which recorded four wounded,” reported the Burkina Information Agency ( AIB, official), citing the Burkinabè army.

According to the platform for monitoring terrorist attacks in Burkina Faso “Sahel Security”, the Burkinabè army repelled this attack using air strikes.

However, according to the same source, one of the wounded in the army, one succumbed to his injuries on Saturday morning.

No party claimed responsibility for the attack on Saturday until 12:30 p.m.

Since 2015 Burkina Faso has been facing a rise in terrorist attacks which have claimed many victims and more than 1.4 million internally displaced persons, according to the government.

In addition, a total of 478 Burkinabè soldiers have died since that date while defending the country’s territorial integrity, the Ministry of Defense announced on Monday on the occasion of the 61st anniversary of the National Armed Forces of Burkina Faso.

These attacks also caused the closure of 2,244 schools affecting 304,564 students in several regions of the country, as of May 28, 2021, according to the authorities.

In addition, the violence has forced some 17,500 people to leave the country since the start of the current year according to the UN.

To date, a state of emergency has been declared in 14 of the country’s 45 provinces, in order to facilitate the fight against terrorism. Since 2019, the curfew has been implemented in these regions and regularly extended.
