The President of Burkina Faso, Roch Marc Christian Kaboré and his Nigerian counterpart, Mohamed Bazoum reaffirmed, Monday in Ouagadougou, their willingness to pool their efforts in the fight against terrorism in the “two border zone”.

The two heads of state began a working session with their respective delegations on the security issue, particularly at the borders of the two countries.

“The zone of the two borders is an area particularly animated lately by terrorist groups lacking a base in this space, and I think that it is more than ever in our interest, that we mutualize our means and that we engage a decisive action to prevent them from having these bases, “Niger President Mohamed Bazoum said.

Burkinabè President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré, for his part, stressed that one of the areas of cooperation that must be strengthened remains the security issue.

“We must, more than ever, deepen the synergies of actions and further pool our efforts and our forces with a view to defeating terrorism at our common borders,” he stressed.

Kaboré added that “it would be advisable to examine together our cooperation within the bodies of fight against terrorism and promotion of development”, and to hold regularly the joint commissions which make it possible to follow the decisions taken by the two countries.

Since 2012, Mali has fallen into a security crisis marked by terrorist attacks. The situation has spread to its immediate neighbors, in this case Niger and Burkina Faso.

The Nigerien president arrived in Ouagadougou on Sunday, accompanied by his Minister of National Defense Indattou Alkassoum and that of the Interior Alkache Alhada for a working visit.
