Budget 2024 Expectations: Regarding the upcoming budget of the central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, health care sector experts believe that government expenditure will be increased to create a better health care system in India. In the budget, the government will strengthen the health care sector as well as emphasize on better infrastructure and advanced level innovation. The Indian health care industry has high expectations from the upcoming budget. The government will take steps to ensure that people have access to better treatment and improve quality. It will also emphasize on research and development.
Demand to increase expenditure on health care sector: Dr. Girdhar Gyani
Dr Girdhar Gyani, DG, Association of Healthcare Providers- India (AHPI) said that an increase in government spending is necessary to tackle emerging health threats and achieve universal health coverage. He said that the government should prioritise a comprehensive approach to build a ‘healthy India’, focusing on sanitation, clean drinking water and nutrition.

Prabal Ghoshal, Chairman and Director of Ujala Cygnus Group of Hospitals, urged the government to increase healthcare expenditure to 2.5 percent of GDP while focusing on rural areas. IMA President RV Ashokan said that the allocation for the health sector is very low compared to GDP. Apart from this, the expenditure on health determinants like drinking water, sanitation should be given separately. IMA has also written a letter to the Union Finance Minister regarding its demands before the budget. Ashutosh Raghuvanshi, CEO and Managing Director of Fortis Healthcare, talked about giving priority to healthcare infrastructure by increasing the expenditure to 2.5 percent of GDP.

Ayushman Bharat scheme should be restructured
Dr Gyani said that government health institutions should be professionalised under autonomous state boards and the Ayushman Bharat scheme should be restructured to include all eligible beneficiaries covered under the Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC 2011). Sunita Reddy, Managing Director of Apollo Hospitals Group, said that it is important to acknowledge the vital relationship between the country’s economic health and its healthcare infrastructure. She said that a strong healthcare sector should be at the centre of our strategy to achieve the goal of a $5,000 billion economy.
