Budget 2024 PM Surya Ghar Yojana:The coalition government at the center announced the PM Suryaghar Free Electricity Scheme to install solar panels on 1 crore houses. During the budget speech, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the PM Suryaghar Free Electricity Scheme has been launched to install solar panels on the roof to enable 1 crore families to get free electricity up to 300 units every month. During this, she said that More than 1.28 crore registrations and 14 lakh applications have been received so far under the PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme.
What is PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme?
PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme or Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana is a scheme run by the central government. Under this, a target has been set to install solar panels on the roofs of 1 crore houses across the country. Under the scheme, beneficiaries can reduce their electricity bills by almost two-thirds.
If you install solar panels on the roof of your house under this scheme, then the central government will give a subsidy of up to Rs 78,000 to the beneficiaries in different categories. The purpose of the free electricity scheme is to enable people to install solar panels so that their expenditure on electricity needs is negligible.

How much will the solar plant cost
Under this scheme, beneficiary families will get the facility of solar rooftop plant at low cost. It is being told that the estimated cost of a solar plant with 1 kilowatt capacity can be Rs 60,000. The efficiency period of the solar panel is being said to be 25 years. After installing the solar plant, consumers will save two-thirds in their electricity bill.
This is how you can apply
Before applying to avail the free electricity scheme, consumers must have some important documents with them which include documents like electricity bill, its soft copy, bank details. The consumer should keep the soft copy of the electricity bill in JPG, JPEG or PDF format in his laptop, smartphone or device. The size of this file should not exceed 500 kilobytes (kb). Actually, while applying, the soft copy of the electricity bill in the appropriate format and size will be accepted. To avail the scheme, electricity consumers can apply with the help of the steps mentioned here.
First of all go to the official website of PM Suryaghar pmsuryaghar.gov.in or Solar Rooftop Portal solarrooftop.gov.in.
Now select the state, district, name of the electricity distribution company (eg Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited) and enter the customer number i.e. customer account number mentioned on the electricity bill and click on the Next button.
In the next step, you will be asked for your mobile number. Enter the number which is active because it will be used for verification. Enter the number in the required place and you will receive an OTP for verification. Enter it carefully in the given place. After this, enter the alternate email ID and the mandatory captcha code and click on the proceed button.
As soon as you do this, the details related to the electricity consumer can be seen pre-filled on your screen automatically. In this step, the consumer should match the details. If any details need to be updated, then click on the Refresh Customer Data option shown in green color on the screen. Now proceed further by filling the latest details to update.
In the next step, based on the database, all information related to the electricity distribution company including the customer account number will be visible on the screen.
Now under Solar Rooftop Details, you will be asked to fill the category and solar plant capacity (in kW). While filling these details, you can take the help of Solar Rooftop Calculator. After this, proceed further by clicking on Save and Next button.
Finally you will be asked to upload the electricity bill. At whatever location of your device you have kept the soft copy of the electricity bill. Click on the Choose File button appearing on the screen and select the copy of the electricity bill from the respective location and upload it. The size of the electricity bill file is accepted only up to 500 kilo bytes. If the size is more than this, the document will not be uploaded. After this, click on the Final Submission button appearing on the screen in yellow background.
Wait for the application to be approved. As soon as you get the approval, you will be able to get a solar plant installed on your rooftop from any vendor registered with the electricity distribution company.
After successful installation of the solar plant Submit its details on the official website of PM Surya Ghar. Apply for net meter from this portal.
After installation of net meter and inspection by the electricity distribution company, a certificate will be generated on the PM Surya Ghar portal.
As soon as you get this certificate, submit the bank details and cancelled cheque through the official website of PM Suryaghar. After completion of this step, the subsidy will be credited to your bank account within the next 30 days.
