Nainital: Heavy rains and floods caused by cloudburst in Uttarakhand. Extreme levels of flood danger were announced in at least two places. So far 23 people have died in the rains. Hundreds of tourists have been stranded at various hotels in Nainital due to floods and mudslides. Uttarakhand Chief Minister assesses the tragedy in and around Rudraprayag.

Meanwhile, the Border Roads Organization rescued the occupants of a car that fell into a ravine near Badrinath. The car, which was trapped in the middle of the stream, was tied to a bulldozer and rescued. News agency ANI has released footage of the car being towed on Monday. The Badrinath-Rishikesh road has been damaged due to heavy rains in the Sirobagad area. The Khamkra-Khedakhal-Khirshu road, which is connected to the highway, is also blocked by landslides.

Many rivers in the state are overflowing as heavy rains continue for the last 48 hours. The Central Meteorological Department has issued a red alert in the state. The Gola bridge in Kathagodam district was washed away by the rains, the district administration said. With this, the transport to the district was partially disrupted. There were reports of several houses being destroyed and several people missing at various centers. The army has also deployed helicopters for rescue operations.

Several people were injured in the heavy rains in Ramgarh village in Nainital following the cloudburst and were rushed to nearby hospitals. Roads in Nainital were flooded as heavy rains continued. Homes and shops were flooded and damaged.

The Badrinath National Highway in Chamoli district was blocked at seven places due to mudslides. A bridge under construction at Chambawat across the Chalthi River was also destroyed by the rising water level. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has met Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to assess the situation. As a precautionary measure, the Badrinath Char Dham Yatra has also been suspended. Tourists heading towards Badrinath Temple have been accommodated in a safe place. The meteorological department has forecast less rains in the state from today.
