On December 18, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky had a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron in Brussels (Belgium) about Mr. Macron’s ideas regarding the deployment of French soldiers in Ukraine to achieve peace and stability.
“We share a common vision: credible commitments are essential for a truly achievable peace,” Zelensky said. The leader announced that he would continue to work on President Macron’s initiative regarding the presence of forces in Ukraine that could contribute to stabilizing the path to peace.
The French President’s Office said increasing support for Ukraine is a priority and will continue to give partners the means to defend and defeat Russia’s military plans.
The Russian minister warned of the possibility of fighting with NATO in the next 10 years
Mr. Macron will also maintain close dialogue with Ukraine and international partners to restore lasting peace and equality.
The French President has repeatedly mentioned the possibility of sending soldiers to Ukraine, but some other Western allies object.
In related developments, British Defense Minister John Healey suggested that the country could deploy soldiers to Ukraine to train host forces. In an interview with the media, Mr. Healey said that Britain needs to make training activities more suitable for Ukraine’s needs. Minister Healey visited Kyiv on December 18 to discuss plans to increase aid.
Currently, Britain is training Ukrainian soldiers on British territory but has not sent infantry to the front line due to concerns about escalating the conflict and being directly involved. However, Britain has provided many lethal weapons to Ukraine such as Storm Shadow cruise missiles, Challenger tanks or air defense systems.
