DECRYPTION – Algeria will not join the five countries that make up the Brics this year. For some economists, Algeria would even have everything to gain from this refusal.
By announcing that it is ultimately the Minister of Finance – and not the president in person – who will represent Algeria at the Brics summit which begins this Tuesday in Johannesburg, the official news agency has said almost everything. Does Algeria, in the race among the twenty-three countries applying for membership, have a chance of becoming a member of the organization?
In informed circles, where the candidacy is followed closely, everyone has made up their minds. President Tebboune, who said last year that 2023 would be “crowned by the accession of Algeria to the Brics”finally declared at the beginning of August that the entry into the group would be rather “through a first phase, that of observer member”highlighting: “Algeria is not going to win.”
