Black Friday 2021, why is it called that?

Black Friday 2021 also arriving in Italy on the last Friday of this month, and that is next November 26th. With its discounts and promotions, it is the most awaited day for discount shopping that will allow shoppers to realize some dreams, or take off some extra whims, at low or very low cost. But what exactly is Black Friday and why is it called that? Here are some curiosities.

‘Black Friday’, in the USA, marks the official start day of Christmas shopping e the date falls exactly on the day after Thanksgiving, an anniversary that is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. Although the tradition of special discounts was consolidated only between the 1950s and 1960s, the origin and first experiment in this sense is due to the Macy’s chain of stores which in 1924, and just the day after Thanksgiving, organized a parade to celebrate the start of shopping for Christmas. But why exactly ‘black’? Two are the most accredited hypotheses so far. On the one hand, the definition derives from the congestion of busy and paralyzed streets due to the frenzy of shopping, on the other hand the origin of the name can be traced back to the way in which the shopkeepers of the past used to divide the entrances and exits of the business by color: red for losing accounts and black for profitable ones.
