The central government has changed the list of essential medicines and 39 new medicines have been included in it. This move of the government will bring down the prices of widely used essential medicines. The drugs that have been included in this list include drugs that fight cancer, diabetes, tuberculosis and HIV, apart from some antivirals.

The government has also removed the existing list of 16 medicines and the names of 399 essential medicines are now present in the final NLEM 2021. It is currently under direct price control. This means that there is a price cap by the government on all the medicines in this list so that these medicines can be made available to the patients at a lower cost.

This list prepared by the Expert Committee under the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) was submitted to Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Thursday. Once notified by the Ministry of Health, it will be evaluated by the Standing Committee on Medicines and Health Products (SCAMHP).
