“It’s pretty much certain” that a meeting will take place, an administration official said on condition of anonymity because the meeting has not yet been formally announced. “We are starting the planning process,” the official said.
A second senior administration official said Biden looked forward to meeting Xi, but “nothing has been confirmed yet,” The Washington Post reported. Officials said plans will become clearer after Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visits Washington in the coming weeks.
“China and the United States are continuing to discuss bilateral engagement and exchanges,” Liu Pengyu, a spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in Washington, said in an email. “Both sides need to work in the same direction, overcome obstacles and manage differences with concrete actions, and enhance dialogue and expand cooperation in good faith,” he said.
According to The Washington Post, this will be the first in-person meeting between the leaders of the two largest economies since they met on the sidelines of the Group 20 summit in Bali, Indonesia last November. There, both presidents stressed the importance of face-to-face diplomacy and expressed hope that they can get US-China relations back on track.
