Belgian Victor Campenaerts timed his attack in a three-man sprint to the finish perfectly to win the 18th stage of the Tour de France on Thursday, a mountainous 179.5km ride from Gap to Barcelonnette.
The 32-year-old Lotto rider was the fastest of the three who had been drawn from the day’s large breakaway. Campenaerts was in the leading trio with Michal Kwiatkowski and Matteo Vercher, with the Belgian biding his time behind the other two riders before exploding into a powerful sprint in the final 200 metres to take the win.
