Anadolu Efes was able to retain his title of European champion on Saturday evening during the final of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague played at the Stark Arena in Belgrade (Serbia).
In a match dominated by Real Madrid until the last quarter, the proteges of Turkish coach Ergin Ataman were able to regain the advantage in an unpredictable and suspenseful end to the match.
In the first half, Real Madrid quickly took the advantage by dominating their opponent, especially on the offensive rebounds and through a remarkable success on the 3 points.
With the corrections made by Ataman, the Istanbul club was able to overcome its defensive shortcomings and regain the upper hand in recovering the ball, but that was not enough to make up for the advantage taken by the Spanish opponent and its pivot cap- Verdean Walter “Edy” Tavares. Score at halftime: 34-29 for Real Madrid.
Despite a difficult start in the third quarter, in which Anadolu Efes very quickly fell behind (40-31), the Bosphorus team came back to within two points of their opponent (42-40) thanks to the agility its two leaders, Shane Larkin and Vasilije Micic as well as its German pivot Tibor Pleiss (MVP); and this, despite the exceptional defensive performance of Real’s French pivot, Vincent Poirier.
After an explosive final quarter, Anadolu Efes won their second straight title in Europe’s most prestigious club competition.
Last year, the Turkish club became Euroleague champions for the first time in its history, thus joining the other Istanbul formation of Fenerbahçe Beko, champion of the 2016-2017 season of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague.
Despite this defeat in the final, against their Turkish opponent, Real Madrid remains the most successful club in the Euroleague with 10 trophies (1964, 1965, 1967, 1968, 1974, 1978, 1980, 1995, 2015, 2018).
In the match for the third place of the Turkish Airlines Euroleague 2022 podium, FC Barcelona (Spain) dominated their Greek opponent Olympiacos on Saturday evening at the Stark Arena in Belgrade, with the score of 84-74.
