The celebrations for the new year have arrived full of tragedy in New Orleans (Louisiana). At least 10 people have died and about 30 have been injured this Wednesday after a vehicle ran into a crowd on Canal and Bourbon streets, in the heart of the city, according to NOLA Ready, the city’s emergency agency. The mass accident occurred in an area where people gather to celebrate the new year. Sources cited by the WDSU television network, the city’s NBC-affiliated station, indicate that authorities are investigating the incident as intentional.
The incident occurred around 3:00 a.m. local time (10:00 a.m. in mainland Spain), towards the end of the New Year’s celebrations. New Orleans police also indicated that they were responding to an incident with multiple victims, including some fatalities, but without specifying numbers. The NOLA Ready agency advised people to stay away from the area. No additional details have been released.
Dozens of emergency services vehicles, including police, ambulances and firefighters, have been moved to the area. The city planned to host the AllState Bowl this Wednesday, a college football quarterfinal game at the city’s Caesars Superdome, which is expected to be attended by thousands of people. The city will host the Super Bowl, the final of the professional American football league, on February 9.
“This morning a horrible act of violence took place on Bourbon Street,” tweeted Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry. “Please join [mi esposa] Sharon and I in prayers for all the victims and the first responders on the scene. “I urge everyone near the scene to avoid the area,” he added.
