A major accident took place in Jorhat, Assam on Wednesday. Here two passenger boats collided in the Brahmaputra river. Many people are said to be missing in this accident. Relief and rescue work is going on in full swing on the spot. On the other hand, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has confirmed the incident. Along with this, he has advised Minister of State Bimal Bora to go to the accident site immediately.
According to information, at least 100 passengers were in the boats when they collided with each other at Nimati Ghat in Jorhat, about 350 km from Guwahati. One boat, a government passenger boat, was coming from Majuli (a river island in the Brahmaputra river) towards Nimati Ghat, while the other boat was going in the opposite direction. During this, both of them collided. After that the boat capsized. Some passengers tried the boat while others jumped into the water to save themselves.
Cars and motorcycles on boats were washed away in the river along with the belongings of passengers. On information, officials of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) reached the spot and started the rescue operation. Soon after the incident, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma directed the district administrations of Majuli and Jorhat districts to expeditiously complete the rescue operation with the help of National Disaster Response Force and SDRF.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted that I am hurt by the tragic boat accident near Nimti Ghat in Jorhat. Instructions have been given to Majuli and Jorhat administration to help the people and speed up the relief and rescue operation. Apart from this, NDRF and SDRF have been sent to the spot. Along with this, he has asked the Minister of State Bimal Bora to reach the accident spot immediately.
Amit Shah calls up Assam CM
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah called and inquired about the boat accident at Neemtighat in Jorhat and took an update on the status of those rescued so far. He (Home Minister Amit Shah) said that the central government is ready to provide all possible help.
PM Modi saddened by the accident
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the boat accident in Assam. The PM said that every effort is being made to save the passengers.
40 people rescued
Jorhat ADC Damodar Burman said that about 50 people were on board the boat involved in the accident in Assam’s Brahmaputra river, out of which 40 people have been rescued. Rescue team is on the spot.
‘120 passengers were in both the boats, rescue operation continues’
Meanwhile, NDRF DG Satya N Pradhan said that two boats carrying about 120 passengers collided in the Brahmaputra river in Jorhat. Many passengers are missing. Relief and rescue operations are on.
Sonowal directed to provide all possible help
Meanwhile, former Chief Minister and Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has directed his ministry to provide all possible help in the rescue operation, expressing concern over a boat accident in Majuli in Assam on Wednesday. Sonowal spoke to the Chief Minister of Assam over phone and inquired about the ongoing rescue and relief work.
