- Rajiv Gandhi’s name to be removed from Assam’s Orang National Park
- Congress strongly protested this decision of Assam government
- Name changed to honor the sentiments of tribals: Himanta
Politics has intensified over the change of name of Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Park located on the banks of Brahmaputra river in Assam. The Himanta Biswa Sharma government has decided to remove Rajiv Gandhi’s name from the name of the National Park, respecting the sentiments of the local tribals. Now this park will be known as Orang National Park only. While the Congress has fiercely attacked this decision of the Assam government, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma has also responded to the allegations of the Congress.
Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala has termed this decision of the Assam government as humiliating. He said- ‘The person who has become the CM of Assam, who used to say that he is in politics because of Rajiv Gandhi. By erasing his name (Rajiv Gandhi), what does he think will be erased. Nothing will be gained by erasing the names of martyrs from the parks.
Rajiv Gandhi’s name was added by Congress government in 2005: Sharma
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma has responded to the Congress’ attacks. He wrote on Twitter – ‘I want to clarify a few things. The name of Orang National Park has not been changed. No national park in Assam is named after a person. In the year 2005, the then Congress government broke this tradition and added the name of former PM Rajiv Gandhi to the park. We have restored the original name of the park to honor the local tribals.
Modi underestimates Congress prime ministers: Gaurav Gogoi
On the other hand, Congress MP from Assam Gaurav Gogoi has also expressed strong opposition to the renaming of the park. He said that it is not just about Assam but we have seen this across the country. This is an insult to the Prime Ministers of the country who came from Congress from Jawaharlal Nehru to Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi. We have seen how Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his supporters have consistently underestimated the contribution of these leaders. PM Modi should not forget that all these former Prime Ministers have sacrificed their lives for the country.
