Aoun: Israel must freeze oil and gas exploration in disputed regions

Israel should freeze oil and gas exploration in the maritime regions disputed by Lebanon, as this move contradicts indirect negotiations (with Israel) mediated by the United States and the UN. This was stated by Lebanese President Michel Aoun at a meeting with the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative for Lebanon Joanna Vronetskaya, the administration of the Lebanese head of state reports.

Aoun received the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative for Lebanon at the Baabda Palace. The parties touched upon the topic of exploration work to find oil and gas, initiated by Israel in the disputed sea region in the south of the country.

The Lebanese President stressed that Beirut does not accept an agreement between Israel and one of the American companies to conduct exploration work.

In addition, Aoun and Vronetska exchanged views on the activities of the newly formed government under the leadership of Najib Mikati, as well as on the parliamentary elections to be held in Lebanon next May.
