New Delhi : Activist Sharjeel Imam will be tried for sedition in the inflammatory speech case. A Delhi court on Monday framed charges against Sharjeel Imam under several sections of the IPC including sedition charges against Sharjeel Imam. Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat ruled IPC sections 124A (sedition), 153A (promoting enmity between groups on grounds of religion), 153B (making statements against the integrity of the country), 505 (mischievous statements) and 13 (unlawful activities). Sharjeel is in judicial custody
The Delhi Police had registered an FIR against Imam in 2020. Later, sections of UAPA were also added to it. According to the FIR, the alleged inflammatory speeches were made at two places. Sharjeel Imam delivered a speech at Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi on 13 December 2019. After this on 16 January 2020 at Aligarh Muslim University. Sharjeel Imam is in judicial custody since January 2020.
