Sharjeel is in judicial custody
The Delhi Police had registered an FIR against Imam in 2020. Later, sections of UAPA were also added to it. According to the FIR, the alleged inflammatory speeches were made at two places. Sharjeel Imam delivered a speech at Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi on 13 December 2019. After this on 16 January 2020 at Aligarh Muslim University. Sharjeel Imam is in judicial custody since January 2020.
Also accused of being the ‘mastermind’ of Delhi riots
An FIR was registered at Jamia Nagar Police Station regarding the violence that took place in Jamia on December 13-14, 2019. The police had filed a chargesheet in the case on July 25, 2020. Section 13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 was also added to the chargesheet in Delhi’s Patiala House Court. Apart from this case, Imam is also accused of being the mastermind of the February 2020 riots in which 53 people were killed and over 700 were injured.
