Turkish and US Defense Ministers Hulusi Akar and Lloyd Austin on Thursday held a telephone conversation during which they discussed issues related to the operation and security of Kabul International Airport after the withdrawal of US and NATO contingents from Afghanistan.
Following the talks, the Turkish Defense Ministry said in a statement that “Turkish personnel continue to provide the necessary support to the operation of Kabul International Airport after the completion of the Resolute Support mission.
The ministry recalled that the Turkish contingent has been in Afghanistan for two decades and is responsible for operating the airport for six years.
The Turkish Defense Ministry stressed that the Kabul airport is “the country’s only gateway to the world and is crucial for the security, peace and well-being of Afghans.”
This is the second telephone conversation in the last two days between Hulusi Akar and Lloyd Austin on the management of the Kabul airport.
Commenting on the conversation that took place the day before, the Turkish Defense Ministry noted that it was held in a positive and constructive manner. In the meantime, there is no need to worry about it. ”
