About 30 states in the US with a total population of more than 60 million people are being affected by the snowstorm. As of the afternoon of January 5 US time, 7 states including Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri and New Jersey have declared a state of emergency, NBC News reported.
Weather forecasters say the above severe weather is caused by cold air circulating around the North Pole.
The US National Weather Service (NWS) office in Kansas City, Missouri advises people not to go out unless there is an urgent need. “People may not even be able to get where they need to go. Stay home, stay warm and safe,” NWS announced.
The NWS bulletin announced that this blizzard could cause record snowfall, leading to icy conditions in the south. A pressure system moving from west to east has brought extreme weather to the central US states. About 80,000 households in the states lost power during the storm.
According to the flight tracking website FlightAwareabout 1,500 flights to and from the US were canceled, with the highest number of cancellations at Kansas City and St.Louis Lambert international airports. In addition, 25,000 flights were delayed, causing congestion and chaos. Some trains were also disrupted by severe snow.
In the capital Washington DC, most employees not working in emergency professions were asked to stay home on the evening of January 5. The storm is forecast to bring up to 38 cm of snow in the hardest-hit states.
Faced with the snowstorm situation in the US capital, US House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson said that Congress will still hold a scheduled meeting on January 6 to confirm the victory of US President-elect Donald Trump.
