The US State Department said, citing security threats in the area, that US citizens who are in or near the Serena Hotel should leave the place immediately. The UK State Department said in an update to its advisory not to travel to Afghanistan, “You are advised citizens to stay away from hotels due to the increased risk.”

The Serena Hotel is Kabul’s most famous luxury hotel, which used to be the first choice of foreigners before the Taliban took over Kabul eight weeks ago. It has twice been the target of extremist attacks.

Taliban leader Baradar is now believed to be living in Kabul Palace, while his supporter and Mullah Omar’s son, Defense Minister Mullah Yakub, is still in Kandahar. Sirajuddin Haqqani still lives in Kabul. The arrival of Taliban co-founder, Mullah Baradar, will increase tensions within the government as the Yakub faction is a strong rival of the ISI-backed Haqqani faction. The same is the case with the Afghan opposition to the Taliban, in which each leader seeks supremacy and is unwilling to work with anyone.

In an interview with Afghan National TV in mid-September, Mullah Baradar denied reports that he was injured or killed in a brawl at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in Kabul last week. When asked about these reports in the media, Baradar had said, ‘No, it is not true at all. Thank Allah that I am fit and healthy. And there is no truth in the media claim that we have internal disagreements or internal squabbles.

In fact, the battle for supremacy between the Taliban and the Haqqanis has been going on since the occupation of Kabul. The Taliban’s political wing is protesting the prominence of the Haqqani network in the government. At the same time, the Haqqani network considers itself to be the most fighter unit of the Taliban. Baradar’s faction believes that his diplomacy has given the Taliban power in Afghanistan, while those in the Haqqani network believe that victory in Afghanistan has been achieved through fighting.
