In the men’s singles final of the All England Badminton Championship, India’s Lakshya Sen faces Olympic champion and world number-1 Viktor Axelsen. The 20-year-old had defeated defending champion Lee Ji Jia of Malaysia in three games in the semi-finals. Lakshya won the match 21-13, 12-21, 21-19. At the same time, 28-year-old Axelsen of Denmark defeated Chou Tien Chen. 2020 champion Axelsen is in the final for the fourth time in a row. They have lost in the final twice.
Lakshya is the fourth man from India to play the final and the fifth player overall. So far only two Indians Prakash Padukone and Pullela Gopichand have won this tournament. In 2015, Saina Nehwal was defeated in the final. Lakshya Sen won the bronze medal at the World Championships last year. He had lost to Kidambi Srikanth of India in the semi-finals.
World No-10 Lakshya Sen has got just one win in 5 matches against Axelsen. He got this victory at the German Open this month. In the semi-finals of the tournament, Lakshya defeated Viktor Axelsen 21-13, 12-21, 22-20. Axelsen had won unilaterally in all the four matches played before that. Lakshya could not win a single game in those four matches. Axelsen won the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics. He defeated two-time Olympic champion Lin Dan in the 2016 Rio Olympics bronze medal match.
