The first nuclear power plant in Turkey “Akkuyu” will become the largest nuclear power plant in the world, where the construction of all 4 power units is underway at the same time.
Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Fatih Donmez wrote about this on his Twitter page.
According to him, Turkey is step by step approaching the goals for 2023 in its half-century history of the development of nuclear energy.
“An important step has been taken in the construction of the Akkuyu NPP, which will become a significant event within the framework of the 100th anniversary of our Republic. The license for the construction of the 4th power unit of the nuclear power plant was obtained. Akkuyu NPP will become the largest nuclear power plant, where all 4 power units are being built simultaneously, ”the minister said.
Earlier, the Turkish authorities issued a license for the construction of the fourth power unit of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant. The project is being implemented by the Akkuyu Nuclear Company.
The Akkuyu NPP construction project is the world’s first NPP project implemented according to the BOO model (Build – Own – Operate = Build – Own – Operate). This means that Akkuyu Nuclear JSC is responsible not only for design and construction, but also for maintenance, operation and decommissioning of the plant. This model, among other things, serves as an additional assurance of the quality of construction, since all subsequent operation will also be carried out by the industry company.
The Akkuyu NPP construction project is being implemented by Akkuyu Nuclear on the basis of an intergovernmental agreement signed between the Republic of Turkey and the Russian Federation in May 2010. Upon completion of construction, the NPP with an installed capacity of 4,800 MW will generate about 35 billion kWh per year.
The nuclear power plant construction project is the largest joint project of Turkey and Russia.
