Afghanistan: UN contacts with the Taliban after the foreign currency ban in the country

AA / New York

The United Nations announced on Wednesday that it was in contact with the Taliban movement, after the latter banned the use of foreign currency in Afghanistan.

This is what emerges from a press conference held by Farhan Haq, deputy spokesperson for United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, at the permanent headquarters of the International Organization in New York.

The Taliban announced on Tuesday that they had banned foreign currencies from Afghan territory.

“We are in contact with the authorities in place (i.e. the Taliban) and we are working to preserve our operations on the ground and to ensure that we can continue the humanitarian efforts there,” Haq said. .

In a statement, released Tuesday by their spokesperson, Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban explained that “The economic situation and the national interest of the country require that all Afghans use the Afghani as currency for all their transactions” .
