Identity of Vietnamese referee in AFF Cup group stage
There are 6 Vietnamese referees and assistant referees on duty at the AFF Cup 2024: Ngo Duy Lan, Nguyen Trung Viet, Le Vu Linh, Nguyen Trung Hau, Hoang Ngoc Ha and Nguyen Manh Hai. According to the regulations of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and Southeast Asia (AFF), referees from countries whose national teams are competing in the 2024 AFF Cup will not be allowed to officiate. In the Southeast Asia region, AFF also only invites referees from countries that have been licensed by FIFA to use VAR technology (such as Vietnam, VAR is used in the V-League). VFF has hired referees from Saudi Arabia, Korea, Japan… to officiate matches in the AFF Cup 2024, to ensure neutrality and objectivity.

In the AFF Cup 2024 group stage, referee Ngo Duy Lan is the 4th referee in the matches Singapore – Cambodia and Malaysia – Singapore. Referee Le Vu Linh and assistant Nguyen Trung Hau are on duty at the match between Timor Leste and Singapore at Hang Day Stadium. Assistant referee Nguyen Trung Viet was also assigned to one match in Group A. Whistleblower Hoang Ngoc Ha was the fourth referee in the match between Singapore and Thailand on December 17 in Singapore. Referee Nguyen Manh Hai was the fourth referee in the match between Thailand and Cambodia on December 20 in Thailand.

Another special feature of the AFF Cup 2024 is that there are no VAR referees at the stadiums even though VAR is being applied for the first time at this tournament. Instead, AFC and AFF sent a permanent VAR referee team in Selangor (Malaysia) during nearly a month of the tournament. The VAR system from here is technically connected to all stadiums in countries with teams participating in the AFF Cup 2024. This VAR referee team will exchange and communicate directly with the main referee. As for the stadiums, AFF only arranges VAR coordinators. The VAR management of the AFF Cup 2024 is still stable at this time.
