The tension first occurred when the parliamentary security unit checked the MPs before the session started.
Opposition MPs, who had previously blocked parliamentary sessions with different methods, placed chairs in front of the podium and threw smoke bombs in today’s session.
As a result of the smoke bomb being thrown, a small fire broke out in the general assembly hall.
In the session that lasted approximately 5 minutes, 73 deputies in the 140-seat parliament voted “yes” in the vote on the 2024 budget.
The session, in which Prime Minister Edi Rama also attended, was postponed by Parliament Speaker Lindita Nikolla due to the tension.
The parliament will continue voting on the 2024 budget negotiations, which envisage public expenditure of over 7 billion euros, later.
In the Albanian Parliament, which had previously witnessed similar tensions, 8 opposition MPs were suspended from parliamentary work for 10 days.
Opposition MPs had previously prevented the sessions from starting by occupying the area allocated for ministers and parliamentary administrators to sit.
Member of Parliament and former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, who is not a member of any parliamentary group, claimed that legislative activities were blocked and asked for “this right to be given back to them.”
Claiming that the Parliament has “turned into the personal institution of Prime Minister Edi Rama and Parliament Speaker Lindita Nikolla”, opposition MPs state that they will continue their actions in the parliament to defend their constitutional rights with all their might.
