Russian attacks on a busy DIY store and residential area in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv this Saturday have killed at least four people and injured several dozen, Ukrainian officials have confirmed. It was the third Russian attack against the town, one of the new fronts opened by Moscow, during the day; Another of the raids has left seven dead.
Two guided missiles hit a DIY hypermarket this Saturday, located in a residential area of Kharkiv, the region’s governor, Oleh Syniehubov, detailed on national television. At least four people have died, two of them store employees. In addition, 40 people were injured in the attack and another 16 are still missing, Syniehubov detailed.
The mayor of Kharkiv, Ihor Terekhov, explained that there were more than a hundred people in the DIY store when the bombs hit. “The attack targeted the shopping center, where there were many people; “This is clearly terrorism,” Terekhov said.
“I was at my workplace. I heard the first impact and… with my colleague, we fell to the ground. There was a second impact and we were covered in rubble,” explained Dmytro Syrotenko, 26, after the attack and with a large wound on his face. Syrotenko, a hypermarket worker, said that he was taken to a safe place by a rescuer, along with other colleagues and buyers.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky denounced the attack: “Another example of Russian madness. There’s no other way to describe it”. “When we tell world leaders that Ukraine needs real air defenses and decisive measures to allow us to protect our people, so that Russian terrorists cannot get close to our border; “We are talking about preventing attacks like this from happening,” he added.
Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, is just 30 kilometers (18 miles) from the Russian border and has been the target of Russian attacks for weeks. This month, Russian troops also raided the northern areas of the Kharkiv region.
