A man killed two people, seriously injured two others and committed suicide in the southwestern German town of Albstadt on Sunday, according to initial reports from police and local media. Authorities are investigating the incident as a case of “domestic violence” and have assured that the population is not at risk.
The incident occurred in a residential area in the Lautlingen district of this city. land Baden-Württemberg, halfway between Stuttgart and Lake Constance. The area remains cordoned off and 30 to 40 vehicles, including police patrols – including special forces officers – and emergency personnel have been dispatched. Several helicopters are also flying overhead, according to media reports.
“We have an open police operation in Albstadt, Lautlingen,” the city police reported on their account on the social network X, adding that there is no risk to the population. “We received several calls warning of gunshots,” the authorities reported. Upon arriving at the house where the incident took place, they found three bodies – “including the alleged suspect,” they said – and two wounded.
There is no indication that this was an attack or an ideologically motivated attack. “The first investigations point to a family crime,” said the police, who asked the public to respect the security cordons that prevent access to the area and to follow the instructions of the emergency services.
The deceased have not yet been identified and their relationship to the attacker is unknown, but several media outlets suggest that they are members of his family. The identity of the attacker is also not yet known. In an initial report, the tabloid Image He published that it was a homicidal attack (Amoktatin German) without providing further details, which was interpreted as a possible attack. The authorities have completely ruled this out. The newspaper added that the man was a hunter and had a gun licence, but this has not yet been officially confirmed.
