A firewall was built on 34 percent of Turkey’s land borders to prevent migration.

In the Presidential Annual Program for 2022, published in the repeated issue of the Official Gazette, activities aimed at preventing illegal passages were included under the title of “security services”.

Accordingly, within the scope of the Border Physical Security System project initiated in 2015 with the aim of preventing the increasing international irregular mass migration, 837 kilometers of the 1295-kilometer Southern border of Turkey’s 2,949-kilometer land borders between 2015 and 2021, and 168 kilometers of the 1182-kilometer Eastern border in 2017. Between the years of 2021, the border wall was built and closed.

Within the scope of the project, as of September this year, a border wall was built on 1005 kilometers, which is 34 percent of the land borders. The construction of the border wall on the 73-kilometer part of Turkey’s 2,477-kilometer eastern and southern land borders, all on the Iranian border, continued this year as well. Border wall and fence construction projects continue in the 238-kilometer-long section on the Iranian border in the East and the 33-kilometer section on the Iraqi border in the South.
