The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation opened a criminal case against Alexei Navalny and his closest supporters on the creation of an extremist community.
Navalny, as well as the former director of the Anti-Corruption Foundation Ivan Zhdanov and the former chief of staff of the politician Leonid Volkov are suspected of creating an “extremist community”, and Lyubov Sobol, Georgy Alburov, Ruslan Shaveddinov, Vyacheslav Gimadi, Pavel Zelensky, Rustem Mulyukov and “other persons” – participation in the “extremist community”.
The investigation claims that Navalny created an “extremist community” no later than 2014. Then Volkov and Zhdanov joined him. According to the investigation, the group’s activities were aimed at “changing the foundations of the constitutional order, undermining public security and state integrity” of Russia.
According to Navalny’s lawyer Vadim Kobzev, the defense was not notified of the initiation of a new criminal case on extremism.
