Barcelona had a hard time getting going at the Palau against Anadolu Efes and went away losing at the timeout of the first quarter (22-24), but as soon as they managed to get ahead (27-24), they never lost their heads again. Although the differences were never too wide, neither did it give the feeling that the game could escape them against the Turks, who were too clueless in their defensive actions and gave the Barça attack ease. In the end, the 90-80 score reflects what happened on the court.
The lack of activity on the part of the visiting team when it came to hindering Barça was evident when Efes committed its first foul in the 19th minute of the game. He finished the first quarter without committing any and was about to go to halftime unspoiled. Hence the enormous anger of Luca Banchi, their coach, asking for more intensity from his team, and reproaching them in the last quarter for not having committed more fouls to stop Barça’s attacks.
The merit of Joan Peñarroya’s team was playing a game in which everyone contributed. Kevin Punter was the top scorer (15 points), but six players scored ten or more. With discreet numbers, it was enough for Barcelona to do things reasonably well with Juan Núñez at the helm.
