Moving the capital takes time and is expensive, leading to a significant shift in a country’s cultural identity. That is why President Masoud Pezeshkian is facing many questions from politicians and others in Iran about this plan.
The plan was implemented in the context that Iran’s economy was facing pressure after a long period of Western embargo, and the value of the rial currency dropped to historic levels in December 2024.
Capital for more than 200 years
Tehran more than 200 years ago became the capital of Iran under the reign of the founding emperor Āghā Moḥammad Khān of the Qājār dynasty.
The idea of moving the capital elsewhere was first mentioned under President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the 2000s. After taking office, President Pezeshkian once again revived this proposal to solve the problems facing Tehran. current challenges such as overcrowding, water scarcity, lack of electricity and other challenges.
Although the above idea was discussed before, the implementation plan was never implemented in reality because of financial shortages and political controversy.
